Some people have a higher emotional intelligence, and grasp on their feelings. But what sets emotionally intelligent people apart, and are they more successful?

If “emotional intelligence” is a term that’s new to you, it’s defined as a person’s ability to identify and manage their own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. Emotional intelligence is typically said to include three skills. The first is emotional awareness — the ability to identify your own emotions and the emotions of others. The second is the ability to harness emotions, and apply them to tasks such as thinking and problem solving, and the third is the ability to manage emotions, regulating your own and also being able to cheer up others or calm them down when they need it.

Emotional intelligence is considered a factor for those who seem to have an unlimited amount of success, both personally and professionally. Being able to work through and control your own emotions, while recognizing the emotions of others and acting accordingly, can certainly give you a boost, professionally, socially and personally. Here are ten habits of highly emotionally intelligent people:

1. They Are Positive

Emotionally intelligent people make a conscious decision not to spend time and energy focusing on their problems. They don’t ignore the negatives, but they’d rather look for solutions to a problem than dwell on it.

2. They Set Boundaries

They often seem like pushovers to others, but emotionally intelligent people are able to set boundaries to keep negative people out, and remove themselves from negative situations. They’re typically easy-going, but they are able to stay firm when needed.

3. They Don’t Hold Grudges

Emotionally intelligent people know that holding a grudge will leave them stuck in the past. They are able to deal with their emotions and accept the lesson learned, then move on and look forward to bigger and better things.

4. They Try to Make Life More Fun

Those with high emotional intelligence know what makes them happy, and they are constantly looking for more opportunities to make life more fun, exciting and interesting. They enjoy seeing others happy and fulfilled, and they’ll do whatever they can to brighten someone’s day.

Those with high emotional intelligence are very intuitive, and they refuse to waste their time with negative people. They surround themselves with authentic and positive people to make them feel happier, lighter, and free to be their true selves.

8. They’re Balanced

An emotionally intelligent person knows how important it is to maintain a healthy balance between their work lives and personal lives. They don’t let themselves get burned out or over-worked. They work hard when needed, but they also know when it’s time to relax and do something fun.

9. They’re Self-motivated

An emotionally intelligent person creates their own success. They are self-motivated, and they don’t rely on others to get ahead. They go after what they want while remaining humble, kind and gracious.

10. They’re Grateful

Those with emotional intelligence are able to recognize the positive things in life. They are truly grateful for their jobs, the people who support them, and their ability to see, explore and discover.
