The beach definitely has a peaceful and calming effect. Scientists have now dubbed that effect as “blue space”, due to the combination of soothing smells and the sounds the waves have on your brain.
Have you noticed how relaxed you feel at the beach? It’s not a product of the brains imagination. Scientists maintain that it’s a change in the way your brain reacts to its environment leaving you feeling happy, relaxed and rejuvenated.
The blue space is enough to make you feel at ease in a hypnotic sort of way.
Lora Fleming of the University of Exeter in England says the idea that the beach helps our health is well established. As early as the 18th century doctors use to prescribe trips to the ocean to visit “bathing hospitals”.
Below are the affects that the blue space has on our brains:
The ocean’s waves produce negative ions. Negative ions accelerate our bodies ability to absorb oxygen. They also balance levels of serotonin; a chemical produced by the body that is related to mood and stress. Both swimming or just sitting at the beach with your feet in the water. It may even help us sleep better.
Helps reduce depression
Anxiety and depression share a strong relationship with the kind of environment we are in. The mesmerizing setting and sounds of the waves, the blue sky coupled with the breeze and the view of sand is enough to raise our spirits.
Helps improve creativity
The feeling of peace and the smell of the ocean is unlike that of any other place. It creates a distance from everyday life. With a calm, clear and fresh mind you become more adept in handling the daily stress in your life.
Your concentration and focused will be enhanced.
Overall, spending time at the beach will change your perspective on life.
Nature in general has always been a factor in happy healthy lives, but the beach in particular is so good for the mind, body and soul.
If you are troubled by stress, anxiety or depression, then the beach is where you should be!
