The pain of being dumped is excrutiating. It makes you crazy.  You stalk your ex on facebook, send 100 s of text messages daily, stop eating because your appetite is gone, drink to deaden the pain.

It is not only you who experiences this, there is a scientific reason for why you make so many terrible choices after a breakup and it  has to do with the hormones running through you system during this time. Ironically these are the same hormones that make you happy when you are falling in love.

Heartbreak really does hurt. Functional MRI scans have shown higher than normal activity in the pain in the region that registers pain in people who have been dumped. This triggers the release of stress hormones cortisol and adrenal leading to all kinds of symptoms such as difficulty breathing, nausea and also weakening of the heart muscle. This weakening is called Takotsuco cardiomyopathy and can sometimes be fatal.

Stress hormones are not the only hormones released. Researchers from Rutgers University asked 10 women and 5 men who were still deeply in love with the partner who dumped them to get inside an MRI machine and look at photos of their ex. These scans showed activity in their brains which were very similiar to those of addicts going through cocaine withdrawal. The reason for this is that the reward neurons in your brain are activated and this triggers the release of dopamine.
