A new breakthrough in toothpaste which hardens your teeth while you sleep
A toothpaste that repairs miniscule holes in teeth which could lead to fillings has been developed by a team led by Professor Robert Hill who is the chairman of Dental Physical Sciences at Queen Mary, University of London.
Toothpastes containing BioMInF are able to slowly release calcium, phosphate and fluoride ions over an 8-12 hour timeframe to form fluorapatite mineral to rebuild, strengthen and protect tooth structure. The product will also help people with sensitive teeth. Test showed that the product was more advanced than other re-mineralising toothpastes because the fluoride in BioMinF is released slowly over eight or nine hours unlike regular toothpastes where the active ingredients, such as soluble fluoride gets washed away in less than 2 hours.
A fluoride free version of BioMin is also being developed for individuals who do not want or need fluoride toothpaste.
The toothpaste is being made in Stoke-on-Trent and will be sold immediately via its own website. The cost is approximately £4.99 for a 75ml tube.
The ingredient known as bioactive glass will in future be used to make varnishes to protect childrens’ teeth.
This is an exciting new development and hopefully in future drill-free dentistry could be possible.
BioMin partners are currently being developed around the world, to make BioMin containing toothpastes available to the general public through hospitals, dental clinics, chemists and in some cases drug stores and supermarkets.
