8 Minute Surgery Could Give You Superhuman Vision Forever
Someone could easily mistake the small object in the photo below for a tab of acid or even a piece of plastic from a hole puncher. Yet, it is one of the most advanced and far-reaching pieces of technology currently in development.
It’s called the Ocumetrics Bionic Lens. Dr. Garth Webb, an optometrist from British Columbia, came up with the lens while looking for a way to optimize and enhance eyesight. His invention could spell certain death for glasses and contacts.
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about the Ocumetrics Bionic Lens is that installation only takes 8 minutes – the sun could literally explode and the operation would be done before you found out.
Also remarkable is that the operation is apparently painless, as Webb tells the CBC.
The lens is currently pending animal trials and will move on to human testing shortly. Webb predicts the lens could be available by 2017!
So how does it work? Webb tells the Vancouver Sun that the technology is being developed as a replacement for the eye’s natural lens, which poorly affects health due to cataracts.
The surface of the lens is crafted to eliminate image distortion and project as clear an image as possible onto the retina — and enable eyesight reportedly three times better than 20/20.
